NUGS Opposes AFRC Probe Call

The 16th Annual congress, of the National Union of Ghana Students at the University of Science and Technology here has called on all Ghanaians to resist the call by two members of the erstwhile AFRC for international and local commissions of enquiry into activities of the AFRC and to determine whether the Transitional Provisions of the Constitution should be allowed to remain.
The congress felt the call by the two army officers, Captain Boakye Djan and Major Mensah Poku
was an affront to the sovereignty and independence of the people of Ghana.
It called on Ghanaians to stand up against all the intrigues, plots, conspiracies and schemes to disarm and cause chaos and confusion in the country.
The views of the congress were communicated at an emergency press conference at the UST last Sunday evening by Mr. Steve Akuffo, out-going president of the NUGS.
According to Congress the call for the probe was the latest manoeuvres and part of the general campaign by imperialists and their colonial agents to deprive the working people of the country of their democratic gains.
The NUGS president stressed that Ghanaians president could not and would never, forget the sufferings that were inflicted on them by all kinds of inter national bodies and countries as a result of the June 4 uprising and the struggle of the masses for democratic gains.
“Britain, U.S., France, Canada, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Upper Volta, Amnesty International, and the International Commission of Jurists stood up against the June 4 era and we cannot allow any such bodies to come and probe that period”, he said.
The NUGS president said the congress would want to warn those behind the intrigues that it had taken a very serious view of the mischievous manoeuvres, and that the plots, intrigues and schemes would be fiercely resisted “by all who hold June 4 very dear’.
Such people, he said, would be held responsible for any confusion, instability, coup d’etats and chaos that might result from their plots to destroy the popular achievements of the country’s masses.
