STATEMENT TO THE PRESS BY NUGS ON THE “LEGON INCIDENCE.”
We, the Executive of the National Union of Ghana Students – the mouthpiece of students in the country, have learnt with shock and horror the recent brutalities meted out by a section of the Ghana Police Service to some students at the University of Ghana, Legon.
This untimely and premature appearance of the “Riot Squad” on the Campus was unfortunate and to condemn it unreservedly.
We feel strongly that any form of brutal and unwarranted interference in students’ affairs is highly detrimental to Academic work and it constitutes a blatant violation of the newly-won and highly cherished academic freedom in our Institutions Violence begets violence, and in order to forestall the re-occurrence of any such unfortunate situation, we appeal to the University Authorities to settle the matter amicably, by appointing an independent committee to re-examine the content of the punishment meted out to the five students concerned.
In conclusion, we would like to add here that we are absolutely satisfied that the demands of the students of the University of Ghana, Legon, have no political coloration whatsoever and that it is purely an internal affair of the institution.
