THE 500 students of the Queen’s Hall of the University of  Science and Technology, Kumasi, have been ordered to go home following their involvement in an alleged kidnapping of the wife of the University Director of Academic and Student Affairs, at the weekend.

A spokesman for the UST explained yesterday that on Thursday afternoon it was learned that the director, Mr V. A. Bartels, had ordered the closure of the Hall’s dining hall.

The UST authorities were, therefore, looking for Mr Bartels, to explain his action, but the students entered the bungalow of the director and found his wife who was marched by the students to an office at the campus, and locked up.

POOR FEEDING

The spokesman said when the executive of the Students Representative Council heard of what their colleagues were doing, they contacted the Vice-Chancellor. Professor E. Bamfo-Kwakye, who rushed to where the students were and pleaded for the release of the woman.

He said the students explained that their call for the removal of the domestic bursar for alleged poor feeding had led to the closure of the dining hall for about three weeks.

They said since the students’ petitions and resolutions sent to the director for the re-opening of the hall had fallen on deaf ears, they decided to get the director personally, failing which they... the students, the wife was released.

The students have, however, refused to leave the campus and they had called for the withdrawal of the ‘go home’ order because they had apologized for their action, the spokesman added. 

Meanwhile, the academic staff of the university had threatened to go on strike if the students were not sent home. They fear that if they were not punished, they might kidnap their wives who had nothing to do with the affairs of the university in the event of a misunderstanding between them and the students.
