DEMONSTRATION BY U.S.T. STUDENTS – MARCH 22 AND 23, 1973.

The University Council held a special meeting on Wednesday, 18th April, 1973 to consider the report of the Committee which was appointed to 

1): enquire into the circumstances leading to students’ demonstrations at the University on 22nd and 23rd March, 1973; 

2) enquire into any other relevant matters which in the view of the Committee ought to be investigated; 

3) make recommendations to the University Council. 

The University Council decided to refer certain matters in the report raised in memoranda submitted to the Committee by both the Students’ Representative Council and the Academic Staff Association to the relevant statutory Boards and Committees for their study and advice. The University Council expects to discuss the recommendations of these statutory Boards and Committees at its meeting on June 22, 1973. 

On the events of March 22 and 23, the University Council took the following decisions:- “429. RESOLVED That 

(i) the students be informed that Council takes a very dim view of their interference with children on the bus and hopes that such a wanton act of interference will never recur; 

(ii) the full assessed cost of damage caused by the students be paid for by the students by deduction at source from their allowance for the Trinity Term 1973; 

(iii) no student should be suspended or dismissed for his part in the demonstration; 

(iv) the Vice-Chancellor should use his good offices to bring accord amongst the persons affected by the hospital incident and the events of March 22 and 23, 1973;

(V) 3 the students should be reprimanded for side- stepping the laid down procedures for bringing their grievances to the attention of the authorities and for taking the law into their own hands;

(vi) the students should be censured and should be ashamed, for the dirty and obscene language they used during the demonstrations as was evidenced by the inscriptions they made on the walls; 

(vii) the Administration be commended for bringing immediately to the attention of the Civil and law enforcing authorities the violence and wanton destruction of property that had accompanied the demonstration.”
