The Students Representative Council of the University of Science and Technology has stated that major decisions taken at the just ended 16th annual congress of the National Union of Ghana Students at Kumasi do not reflect the views of the general student body.
In a statement to the press, the UST branch of the Congress accused NUGS of
“lack of democratisation in the decision-making process”.
It noted that the steering Committee of the Congress failed to meet the demands of its earlier resolution (February 23) asking:
a. That the National and Permanent Secretariat of twenty delegates be reduced to four in accordance with Article 9 (4) of the NUGS Constitution
b. That the voting rights accorded delegates from the All-African Students Union (AASU) be withdrawn
c. And that any earlier voting be declared null and void.
Referring to its formal letter of withdrawal from the Congress which stated that “all decisions taken at the said congress shall not be binding on the students of Science and Technology”, the UST Delegates expressed their willingness to co-operate with a leadership that is more sensitive to the views of the general student body.
The break-away delegates emphasised that although the NUGS has an important role to play in International affairs yet “in so far as National and Student issues are pressing, NUGS under the prevailing circumstances must concern itself more on practical and constructive ways of solving these problems”.
They further warned that “any attempt to exploit the situation to break the NUGS will not be tolerated by the students of UST.”
The statement copied to the Director of Academic and Student Affairs, UST and all delegations to the Congress including SRCs of all member Institutions was signed by Messiers: W.B. Hagan Jnr., Local NUGS President, Ohene K. Bonsu, SRC Secretary, David K. Boadi, SRC Treasurer and K.E. Koomson, SRC Editor-In-Chief, all students of the University of Science and Technology.
The out-going President of NUGS is Mr. Steve Akuffo (UST) to be succeeded by Mr. Dua Addonteng (Legon).
