A section of the final year students of the University of Ghana, Legon, yesterday staged a four-hour demonstration in protest against the decision of the University Registrar to transfer them from their present halls Legon and Akuafo to the Commonwealth Hall in order to provide accommodation for visitors participating in the West African inter-University Games to be held at the University on March 27.

A spokesman for the students, Mr. K. K. Ekpe told reporters that their formal protest against the removal decision had been treated with levity and they staged the demonstration to claim their rights.

He said the decision to transfer them was arbitrary because those directly affected by the decision were not consulted before it was made. According to the spokesperson, the removal notice was sometime last week and the students, considering their final examinations more important than the impending games, quickly lodged a protest.

In it they stated that the visiting athletes could be conveniently accommodated in four available annexes without necessarily causing the removal of the students, This suggestion was refused outright by the authorities with the excuse that the visitors would find it inconvenient to be climbing up and up to the 3rd, 4th and 5th floors.

The students further complained that their welfare had never been taken seriously and that the relationship between them and the authorities is more or less one of master and servant relationship.”

During the demonstration some of the students held placards some of which read: “Remember Nkrumah is no more Treat us with respect.” “Mr Registrar, think twice.”
