“A Political union of Africa is possible, for the continent is compact enough for the establishment of  a Continental Government either on the lines of the Soviet Union, the United States, China or India.”

This view was expressed by Defence Minister Kofi Baako when addressing a packed hall  of undergraduates,  lecturers and professors here last night.  Mr Baako, who is in charge of civic  education, in high educational institutions, was speaking on “Our constitution and aspirations.”  He told his audience that by Osagyefo’s untiring zeal in working towards African Unity, more African leaders had come to realise that “Union Government is our only for survival as a people.”  Mr.  Baako spoke for two and a half hours and the question time which was stimulating and informative lasted over one hour at the end of which undergraduates asked the for application forms to join the Party and also for copies of Party’s the constitution,

… referendum amending the Party, he said the Party  “has now become the only one national Party” which will be the vanguard of the  people in their struggle to  build a socialist society. The  Minister pointed t out that it was the party that gave birth to the independent Republic  of Ghana and it was the Party which had been charged by the people with the responsibility of nurturing the State and providing support and guiding  inspiration  for the and new tasks ahead.

“Our socialist aims naturally compel us to invest the State with efficient economic and political power to plan and to implement measures  for the social and economic reconstruction of Ghana”, he added.

People’s Choice

Mr Baako said that the state as the repository of all economic and political power “is not to degenerate into an arrogant and insensible bureaucracy, then it must be wedded to the national Party —  the Party of the people – which should be the originating impulse of all Governmental action.  Continuing he said: “In this way, those who are chosen by the people to serve…

… a multi-party system does not and cannot suit us. “A study of all parties which are in opposition to ruling parties in independent states of Africa will reveal that they are all based on narrow sectional interests”.
