STUDENTS’ REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL
U.S.T.
9th May, 1973

Our Ref.SRC/VC/34

The Vice-Chancellor,
U.S.T.,
Kumasi.

Dear Sir,

REQUEST FOR A COPY OF THE REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE APPOINTED TO INVESTIGATE THE CAUSE OF U.S.T. STUDENTS’ DEMONSTRATIONS 22ND AND 23RD MARCH, 1973

With reference to your letter No.VC/S/39/Vol.3 of 6th lay, 1973, I am very much disappointed to learn from you that following a letter you had from the Rt. Bishop Sarpong, a copy of which was attached to yours, you were unable to send us a copy of the report on the above subject as you had promised.

We are convinced that if the University Council would like to publish the Report after expressing her views on it in an accompanying “White Paper” – the publication of which would only be possible after council has received and discussed the Reports and recommendations of the various committees to which according to the Bishop’s letter, some very important matters in the Report have been referred, then we cannot get a copy of the Report to study before we go on vacations.

We are also very sure that there are some pressing issues which have already been discussed in the report and in which we are interested at the moment. These issues which are more or less the immediate Causes of the demonstration are as follows:

(a) The slapping incident

(b) The students’ request that the Acting Resident Medical Officer should be removed.

The other issues referred to in the report may require a long term solution.

So our request now is that if any of the items (a) and (b) has not been investigated in the Johnson Committee Report, then the University Council should as a matter of urgency appoint a committee to go into it and the S.R.C. be informed of the committee’s findings before 22ND JUNE, 1973.

We also deny that the Chairman of the University Council gave us an assurance that he would release a copy of the Johnson report to us, when the committee had completed its work. At a meeting with you on the 27th April, we just informed you that most of the students are anxious to know the outcome of the Johnson Committee and consequently entreated you to contact Bishop Sarpong to make available to us a copy of the Report.

This might have been misconstrued to be an assurance we had from the Bishop.

I hope that you will bring to the notice of the Bishop the contents of this letter.

Counting on your usual co-operation.

Yours Sincerely,

(Sgd.) J.O. KYEI AG. PRESIDENT
