Dear President,
Following your circular of 14th April, 1971, an emergency J.C.R. meeting was convened by the Commonwealth Hall Executive to resolve the burning issue of whether or not an apology must be rendered to the University Council for what they describe as “mis- conduct and discourtesy which students had shown at the last Congregation ceremony of the University on Saturday, 13th March, 1971”.
The members of the Commonwealth Hall Junior Common Room wish to reaffirm their unflinching and unalloyed support for and confidence in, the S.R.C. leadership as far as the “March Crisis” is concerned. The members have accordingly resolved that:
“The S.R.C. be highly commended for the bold and unselfish stand they have taken over the “March crisis” so far;
- It should be hammered on the head of the University Council that the S.R.C. represents the interests of the WHOLE STUDENT BODY and NOT any individual interests;
- NO APOLOGY whatsoever, qualified or unqualified, should be rendered to the University Council; and in the event of any Hall or body of the University rendering such an apology, we members of this great Hall shall dissociate ourselves from such an apology:
- Letters written to the parents/guardians of our S.R.C. representatives concerned should be withdrawn forthwith, and apology rendered to such parents/guardians for the false alarm given them about the conduct of their wards; and above all, apology to the respective students concerned”.
This Mr. President, is our stand. We still stand by the massive Student Action of last March.
You may communicate this to the University Council accordingly.
