APOLOGY TO THE UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

Reference your letter of 14th April, 1971, on the above subject, the Akuafo J.C.R. met on 16th April, 1971, and decided that under no circumstances should the “student leaders” render any apology for the demonstration which was carried out at the last Congregation. 

2. It was further resolved: 

(a) That the boycotting of the Congregation was not purported against the University Council, but the Vice-Chancellor in whom we have lost confidence. 

(b) That we showed due respect to the Chairman of the University Council during and after his speech. 

(c) We find nothing wrong with the demonstration; and see no reason why the said student leaders who actually saw to the peaceful turn-out of affairs should be made to apologise. If anything at all, the University Council should appreciate the fact that students showed a high sense of maturity and responsibility by not resorting to any violent action. 

(d) We notice with grave concern that the University Council sent letters to the parents of the student. leaders during the Easter Holidays, on the said demonstration which was in pursuance of the cause of the entire student body. We feel that this poses a threat to student leadership on the campus. The letters should therefore be withdrawn. 

3. The Akuafo J.C.R. would like to re-affirm its confidence in the present Students’ Representative Council.
