The official inauguration of a branch of the Party at the University of Ghana, Legon this week, marked a new, and we hope, decisive turn in the process of integrating the Intellectual community with the political aims of the nation. This process has been painfully slow and tampered, irritatingly, by acrimonious hedges that have seemed in the past to drag it backwards rather than forwards. One has been concerned about the enormous resilience shown by those who take an insular view of scholarship VIS-A-VIS the national interest. They have resented having to be told that scholarship must serve a social purpose at the ends of the society in which it is acquired and they have been slower to embrace the desirability of placing intellectual thought into a common pool from which the vehicle of national progress will derive its lubrication. The climate of the Party democracy to which the nation dedicated itself has not completely taken them in.

No one is going to deceive himself into thinking that all is over yet. Indeed, the struggle has only begun. But it is some decisive moment to see the beginning,  in actuality, of the struggle.  The Party branch has in fact existed on the Legon campus for two years, but this period of its existence has been marked by formality rather than reality. At best it has fought shy engagement with the forces that must be fought and won over. Not so for now, we hope. 

The branch Party now has its own office, fully equipped, and perched at the pinnacle of the Legon hill in Commonwealth Hall. It has the service of a cadre of students intensely dedicated to the cause of the Party and armed with the Party’s revolutionary/Ideology. It is equipped for the publication of a student’s magazine to carry the ideological battle through, not only at Legon, but at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the University College of Science Education, Cape Coast, where branches of the Party are expected to be. The branch is essentially a student’s affair, but by no means does it leave out the influence of the dons and Professors who, after all, do the job of Influencing and molding student thought. Prof. William Abraham, head of the department of philosophy, Dr W. C. Ekow- Daniels, of the Law faculty, and a good array of Ghanaian dons are closely identified with and guiding the branch. There is a good community of Marxist thought ( Ron Bellarmy, acting  head of the economics department for example) from whom the branch will derive useful exchanges in developing Nkrumaist on the thought. High on the agenda of the Party students is the formation of an Nkrumaist Forum which will be devoted to the study and discussion of philosophical and political problems from the view point of philosophical consciencism.

From this Forum, the basic postulates of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah. CONSCIENCISM will be developed and wielded In struggle against other philosophical trends. Such is the importance of this new trend at the universities that we devote, today the great volume of our REVIEW OF THE WEEK, to the addresses delivered the the launching of the Party, by Mr Kofi Baako, Minister of Defence, Mr Kwodwo Addison, Director of the Kwame Nkrumah Ideological Institute, Winneba, Prof. W. E. Abraham and Mr S. G. Ikoku, senior lecturer of the Ideological Institute. And beginning next week, the “GHANAIAN TIMES” will carry a weekly UNIVERSITIES FORUM in which students and dons alike. from all three universities will report on activities on their campuses and discuss some of the crucial Issues facing the Party, the nation, Africa and the world.
