National Council For Higher Education

June 16, 1978

16th June, 1978.

Dear Mr. Beecham,

Following my telephone conversation with you yesterday afternoon, I write to confirm that at the meeting of the National Council for Higher Education with the Academic Staff Association representatives of the three Universities on Tuesday, 13th June, 1978 the Academic Staff Association gave a joint undertaking to the effect that when the three Universities reopened, all members of the Academic Staff will co back to lectures and would expect that two weeks after their resumption of duties the Government, in turn, would reciprocate the gesture by making a public announcement of the release of their colleague and students in detention. They also requested that the Government should grant an amnesty to all those in hiding as a result of referendum related charges, and give an assurance that there would be no further arrests or molestation on their return.

It will be appreciated if, further to the synopsis forwarded to you, you will now proceed to arrange an appointment for a Committee of this Council to call on the Head of State on Monday, 19th June 1978.

Yours sincerely,

(SGD) C.M.O. NATE
CHAIRMAN

F. W. BEECHAM,
