Ref.No.SRC.14/71/20.
Dear Sir,
In the course of the negotiations with the University Council, we made it positively clear that unless we consulted the student-body whom we represent, we would not be in a sound position to commit them on the issue of an apology as suggested by the University Council.
At long last the reopening of the University has made it possible for us to find both the opportunity and the convenience to consult the student-body, whom we serve, on their reactions to the unqualified apology issue.
All the five JCR Halls of Residence have separately passed resolutions disagreeing ith the University Council’s suggestion and we attach herewith substantive copies of the unanimous resolutions which are self-explanatory.
The SRC exists on the unqualified mandate of the student-body, and it is on this premise that we have all along been negotiating. Therefore, such an unequivocal expression of no regret by the entire student-body for the peaceful demonstrations in March is totally binding on us. Meanwhile, we have also communicated to them the results of our deliberations with the University Council and expect them to be implemented as agreed upon.
We would like to seize this opportunity to thank the University Council, especially the Chairman, The Hon. Victor Owusu, and Messrs. Andoh and Oddoye for their painstaking efforts in helping to return peace on the campus.
We hope in future common sense and goodwill will permit us all the opportunity to resolve all demands before they either escalate or snowball so as to avert unpleasant upheavals.
Yours sincerely,
(Sgd.) Harry Falconer
